You need a different strategy to get ahead
💌 243 words ⌛ 1 minute
You are here because of some key decisions and actions you took in the past. Now you need to understand, that the tactics that got you here, won’t help you to get any further in your work and life. Instead, you need to learn what makes people in your position successful or not.
Why it matters: Different stages in life and business need different skills. You can bang your head into a wall and try to get ahead with what you currently do - you waste your time. Your former skills have served you well to get here, now you need to adapt and learn new skills.
Dig deeper:
Build a support network with people in similar positions - in and outside your organization. Learn from each other, but also challenge each other’s ideas. This can be a great accelerator for your career.
Ask for feedback often, from your peers and direct reports. A simple framework:
What should I start with?
What should I stop?
What should I continue?
Make it a habit to reflect - I recommend daily:
Who have you been in the past 24 hours?
Where did you fall short of your principles?
Ask your manager’s manager what qualities they are looking for when hiring. Do you have these qualities?
What will you start with to turn your career around?
